This was Colleen’s second session. We had a studio portrait session before, when we played with different outfits and photographed her in the safe and relaxed environment of our Lees Summit studio. For her outdoor session she wanted something edgier and raw. She insisted in going at the West Bottoms, downtown Kansas City. I was afraid that that place was going to be too rough for her. Was I wrong!

I haven’t had that much fun in a long time. She was the perfect model. Playing with the poses and ideas I was trowing at her and the adding something of her own. Love the sun flare on the picture above. Master blending of photoshop textures and yummy tones thanks to custom Lightroom presets. Thanks Jan, you rock.

I don’t remember who got more excited when we found this lot full of beaten up cars. It must have been me that pulled out the tilt and shift out of the bag though. I love how this lens can create selective focus and isolate just a narrow strip right over her eyes.

After several shots she decided to drop the tomboy attitude and put on a more serious outfit. What a transformation.

We shot Brandon in our portrait studio in Lees Summit. We did different setups with both studio lighting and natural light. These are a couple of my favorites taken by the front door of the studio.

His mom also wanted some shots with his siblings. What a great idea. We have been doing that more and more lately. Senior photography time can be a great opportunity to ketch up with some family portraiture as well. Anyway, just around the corner from our studio there are some great spots for pictures. Here is the fire escape.

I love shooting the train station. I also like the presets that Jan has been creating for Adobe Lightroom. They totally fit my style of shooting, specially for back lit images.

The grain mill is always cool. We don’t really know how long we are going to have this old structure downtown Lees Summit, so I like to incorporate it in my photography any time I have an opportunity. It makes me feel like I’m preserving this memory for future generations. I know, I’m silly this way.

For her senior portraits we went with Gabi at the River Market, downtown Kansas City. This is becoming one of my favorites spots since has so many different looks. Here is a couple at the park. She looks so fresh and happy.

The bridge has something romantic to it I cannot explain. Maybe it’s the river and the trains, maybe it’s the reflection from the water. Anyway, al the images look more dreamy and my tilt and shift from Germany begs me to get out of the bag. Love this lens on the 5D.

There’s a couple of cool alleys that don’t look too spooky even to a cute girl with white dress. Great color tones on these images and some new photoshop textures Jan created on our recent trip to Kansas.

Here is a more urban and elegant set up. I love this girl’s hair. She could totally do commercial shots for hair products!

After shooting John and Regina’s wedding ceremony in St Louis it was time for more celebrations here in Kansas City. The beautiful reception was organized impeccably by Diane Boone of Arcadian Events and, needless to say, it was a great success.
Every detail was planned and perfectly put together on the terrace of the Kansas City Public Library.

The food was a collection of good eats prepared by Diane Boone and Bonterra Catering. It was not just pretty to look at, it was delicious!!

This was my personal arrangement; crab cake, grilled vegetables, thai skewers and a tiny little take away of asian noodles.

Right before the guests arrived, we had time for few portraits and a little stroll around the block. Perfect opportunity for a glass of wine.

With Chelsey we discussed about her senior session and decided to play with different simple setups in the studio. White seamless paper is a classic. If it works for high fashion shoots on magazines it works for a pretty and fun high school senior girl as well.

You can get lost in all that white in the background, unless you show your character and don’t forget to have fun. She totally pulled it off in this shot.

The broad lighting from the studio main door makes her eyes really pop. She’s got such a pretty smile. I like how this shot of her is just plain beautiful.

Dark alley only lit by a street light… not really. But you get the point. I like the grunginess that comes out from this images.

We first shot Courntey in our studio in Lees Summit. Then, she wanted another session outdoor. We discussed some options and finally narrowed it down to a location that was elegant and urban but with many occasion to run barefoot on a nicely trimmed lawn. The Plaza, downtown Kansas City was the perfect solution.
Love this shot! The architectural elements definitely locate this image. The post processing done by Jan is also awesome, giving a vintage look with lots of dept and rich tones.

Brush creek required a change of outfit and a brief walk along the lazy water of this canal strangely populated by gondolas. Who said Venice?

Then we jumped in the car for a short ride to Kauffman Garden. What a gem! Always spotless, and well groomed, it was the perfect spot for some free climbing. Silly jokes apart, you better have some fit abs to try this trick. I asked her to lean on the archway and next thing she does is this. You can tell we where having some fun.

If you are not seventeen and a girl, you may have overlooked the latest trend about toenails polish. Here is an update for you! Love how timeless this image is. With lots of sweet textures added layer by layer, this photo looks like an antique.

One of my favorites almost at the end of the portrait session. Just pretty.
